Our members have many opportunities for engagement through our diverse projects that aid refugees locally and abroad. Check out some of our work…
Tutoring
Every Saturday in Jacksonville, Florida, we host in-person tutoring sessions with various refugee communities to aid in their English speaking and writing skills, as well as playing games with the kiddos and gardening with them! We also host weekly virtual tutoring where we have over a 100 tutors and about 90 refugee students! We support them in their studies and help them with any barriers they may face.
“One of my favorite [memories] occurred after one tutoring session when one adult student and I spent some time playing music together- him on guitar and me on piano. The language barrier didn’t matter when we both knew the chords to the same songs. To me, that type of human connection that transcends language is at the heart of GRMR.”
Remote area medical clinics
GRMR works with Remote Area Medical (RAM), a nonprofit provider of free mobile clinics, to assist in providing free, quality healthcare to those in need. This includes free dental, vision, and medical services.
Fundraising
Our extremely dedicated members spend their free time helping raise funds for a variety of refugee supporting non-profits every semester through night-time bake sales at Midtown and working sports game concessions.
General body meetings
We hold multiple GBMs each semester which provide important information to members and let them know about upcoming opportunities and events. We also have additional educational opportunities for attendees, which has included guest speakers about the current refugee crisis, a pre-health Q&A panel, and more.
Socials
In addition to all our work to aid refugees locally and abroad, our members get to partake in many social activities throughout the year!
“One thing that’s made me consistently happy with my decision to join is the people I’ve met in GRMR, many of whom I now count as some of my closest friends.”
International Aid Trips
In 2019, GRMR travelled to Amman, Jordan, to provide medical volunteer services in refugee camps. We worked closely with Atlantic Humanitarian Relief, a Boston-based and Jordan registered non-profit, to provide these humanitarian services. This trip provided GRMR volunteers with extensive clinical shadowing as well as exposure to the global medical aid effort.
“Something I really took from this trip was how much can be silently said when looking into another human’s eyes without having to say a word. Trust was transferred and I could assure them that I was there for them and they could thank me all through eye contact and a smile. ”
